If your visa checklist asks for a flight itinerary or reservation, you may wonder whether you need to buy a ticket before you know the outcome of your application. You may also see the phrase “dummy ticket” online and wonder whether it means a real booking. This guide explains the difference and helps you choose the travel document that fits the instructions for your application.

What is a flight itinerary for a visa application?

A flight itinerary sets out your proposed journey: your name, route, travel dates, airlines and flight details. A visa officer may use it to understand when you plan to arrive and leave, and whether your travel plans fit the rest of your application. An itinerary is supporting evidence, not a visa or a guarantee of approval.

The words on visa checklists vary. One may ask for a travel itinerary, another for a flight reservation or a booking. Read the checklist for your destination, visa type and place of application before ordering. For Schengen visas, the European Commission advises applicants to consult the responsible consulate; it also notes that a consulate can request additional documents.

Is a “dummy ticket” a real flight ticket?

“Dummy ticket” is an informal search term, not a precise description of what you will receive. Sellers may use it to describe anything from a proposed flight schedule to a temporary airline reservation. Neither is automatically a paid ticket. A fabricated booking document is something else entirely and should never be submitted as a real reservation.

Before you order anything advertised as a dummy ticket, ask three questions: Does it have an airline booking reference (PNR)? Is an actual ticket being issued? How long is the reservation expected to remain active? A genuine itinerary without a PNR shows a proposed journey; it must not be presented as an airline booking. A reservation with a PNR has a booking record, but a booking reference does not by itself mean that a ticket has been paid for or issued.

Itinerary without PNR, reservation with PNR, or paid ticket?

Document
What it shows
What to check

Flight itinerary without PNR
Proposed flights, route and dates based on available schedules
Suitable only where the relevant checklist accepts a travel plan or itinerary without an airline reservation. It cannot be retrieved as an airline booking.

Flight reservation with PNR
A booking reference linked to a reservation
Check whether the issuing airline supports online lookup and whether the reservation is still active. A PNR is not an issued ticket.

Paid flight ticket
A ticketed booking with a ticket number
Buy one when your plans are firm or when the applicable instructions specifically require a ticket. Check fare and refund terms before paying.

Temporary airline reservations can have ticketing deadlines and may expire. Their lifetime depends on the airline and the booking, so do not assume a PNR will remain active throughout a visa process. An airline may also use a different reference from an agency or booking system; ask the provider how your reservation can be checked. Airlines such as British Airways describe the booking reference used to identify a booking.

Do any visa applications ask for a PNR?

Yes, some specific embassy checklists explicitly request a booking reference. For example:
